Nifty 500 Breadth, 19 Oct 2026: The Rebound Is Losing Its Backing

Only 24% of Nifty 500 stocks are above their 20-day average, and 20-day lows (25.6%) now far outnumber highs (2.8%).

Only 24% of the Nifty 500 was above its 20-day average at the 19 Oct 2026 close. That is down from 31% a day earlier. The index bounced last week, and today’s data says fewer stocks are backing that bounce. My question: is this the start of a new low, or a normal pullback inside a rebound?

Nifty 500 daily chart on 19 Oct 2026 with the share of stocks above the 20-day average at 23.6%, the share with RSI below 30 at 9.2% and the 20-day new highs and lows panel showing 2.8% highs against 25.6% lows

Fewer stocks are above their 20-day average

The middle panel of the chart shows the percentage of Nifty 500 stocks above their 20-day average. It reads 23.6% today, against 31.2% on 16 October and 21.4% five sessions ago. The blue arrow on the chart shows it rolling over again after a short bounce.

In the last year, the reading has been at or below 23.6% on about 15% of trading days, and the one-year median is 43.1%. So this is a weak reading, though not the weakest of the year. Also, 83% of the index trades below its 50-day average (17.0% above) and 66% below its 200-day average (33.8% above).

More stocks are slipping back to oversold

The next panel counts stocks with an RSI below 30, the oversold group. It rose to 9.2% today from 5.8% yesterday and 12.6% on 9 October. The one-year median is 2.8% (75th percentile 7.5%, 90th percentile 13.4%), so today’s reading is above the 75th percentile.

Only 22% of stocks have an RSI above 50, down from about 28% yesterday. On 19 October, 84 stocks advanced and 415 declined, after 253 advances and 246 declines on 16 October. That is 4.9 decliners for every gainer.

New lows are expanding

The bottom panel counts new 20-day highs against new 20-day lows. Today it reads 2.8% highs and 25.6% lows. A day earlier it was 7.6% highs and 12.8% lows, so lows doubled in one session. On the 10-day measure, highs were 5.6% and lows 30.4%, against 15.6% and 15.2% on 16 October.

For context, the one-year median share of stocks at a new 20-day low is 10.2% (75th percentile 18.9%, 90th percentile 29.0%). Today’s 25.6% sits between the 75th and 90th percentile. The one-year median for 20-day highs is 8.7%, so 2.8% is well below it.

The Nifty 500 closed at 22,037.80. That is 1.04% lower on the day and 0.99% higher than five sessions ago. It is 1.95% above its 10-day low of 21,616.15 and 5.23% below its 30-day high of 23,254.15. The index has not made a new low; the stocks underneath it have weakened.

How I read this together

A rebound has lost its backing. The index is close to where it was five sessions ago, but the number of stocks holding short-term trend fell, the oversold group grew, and new lows expanded. That combination says the weakness is spreading under the index, not only in a few heavy stocks.

The order I look for in a fresh decline: the share above the 20-day average rolls over (it has), the oversold group grows again (it has), and new lows expand above the one-year 75th percentile (they have, at 25.6%). What would change my read is the index falling below its 10-day low of 21,616 with new lows still expanding, or the opposite: new lows shrinking while the share above the 20-day average turns up. What I am watching next

  • The share of stocks above their 20-day average: does it hold above the 21.4% of five sessions ago, or break below it?
  • New 20-day lows: do they stay above the 75th percentile (18.9%) or fall back toward the 10.2% median?
  • The oversold group (RSI below 30): a spike above 13.4% (the 90th percentile) would show a washed-out market.
  • New 20-day highs: still below the 8.7% median, so no breakout participation yet.
  • The index against its 10-day low of 21,616.

Questions

What does the share of stocks above the 20-day average measure? It is the percentage of index stocks trading above their 20-day average price. A low reading means few stocks are in a short-term uptrend.

Why do new 20-day lows matter after a bounce? New lows show stocks breaking below their recent ranges. A rebound with expanding new lows is not yet a broad recovery.

Is an oversold reading a signal to buy? No. It describes where participation is today. It does not tell you what to do.

This is market context for study, not a signal to buy or sell.
